Working pressure, test pressure, burst pressure

Three figures circulate and they do not mean the same thing. The working pressure is the one at which the assembly operates continuously; it is the one shown on our product pages. The test pressure is that of the factory test. The burst pressure is classically four times the working pressure on a high-pressure hose.

The point to remember: the weakest link decides. A reel rated 250 bar fitted with a 160 bar hose is a 160 bar assembly. Always check the consistency between drum, hose and couplings, particularly if the hose is supplied by a third party.

The swivel joint decides service life

It is the part that works hardest and the one that fails first. The body material first: brass for everyday use, zinc-plated steel for high pressure, stainless steel for the food industry and corrosive environments. Then the seals, which dictate chemical compatibility and temperature range — NBR covers the ordinary, Viton and PTFE go markedly higher.

The admissible pressure of a joint falls as its diameter grows: a 3/8″ joint holds well beyond 350 bar where a 2″ joint tops out at around 180 bar. It is a direct trade-off between flow and pressure, with no way around it.

Choosing the length without error

The stated capacity always depends on the drum-and-hose combination, never on the drum alone. The same model commonly holds 70 m in Ø 3/8 but only 50 m in Ø 1/2. Start from the actual distance to cover, add the mounting height and some working margin, then choose the drum able to hold that length in the diameter imposed by your flow rate.

Frequently asked questions

Can a jetting hose be fitted to an ordinary water reel?

No, and the reason is not the one you might think. The fluid circuit is not the problem — a swivel joint rated 350 bar holds the pressure — it is the mechanics of the drum. Under pressure, a wound hose expands: each turn pushes on the next and the whole exerts a crushing force on the drum, all the stronger as the hose is long and the pressure high. A standard drum deforms, the flanges spread, and the hose ends up jammed between them. That is why manufacturers who serve the jetting market size this part specifically: Hannay explicitly describes the drum and frame of its 6100 and 6200 series as designed to control hose expansion. The extra cost of a reinforced reel corresponds to that constraint; it is not a comfort option.

Should you choose pressure or flow?

Both, because a pressure washer delivers its energy through their product. At equal pressure, a reel that throttles the passage cancels the benefit of the pump: that is the point of full-flow swivel joints, whose cross-section stays constant through the passage. The starting point for sizing is therefore the pump, not the desired length — it is also what separates, within a single manufacturer, a small-diameter reel going very high in pressure from a large-diameter reel held to a lower pressure but able to pass the volume.

What pressure for a workshop pressure washer?

Common machines work between 150 and 250 bar. Specify an assembly rated for at least the machine’s maximum pressure: the pressure spike when the lance closes exceeds the nominal value.

Can a hose longer than the stated capacity be fitted?

No. Beyond capacity the turns overflow the flange, rub and get damaged, and the hose guide no longer does its job. Move up to the next drum size.

Painted steel or stainless steel for high-pressure water?

Painted steel suits the majority of workshops. 304 stainless steel is required in the food industry and in permanently damp environments, 316 stainless steel on the coast or in the presence of chlorides.
