What cleaning products do to equipment

Alkalis used for degreasing attack aluminium and tarnish brass. Descaling acids go for ordinary steels and unsuitable seals. Chlorinated disinfectants cause pitting corrosion on 304 stainless steel, which is why the food industry often requires 316.

The consequence fits in one sentence: with these fluids, the choice is made on the safety data sheet of the product in use, not on a range of reels.

Hot water changes the picture

Food-industry cleaning is often done at 60 or 80 °C. That temperature reduces the admissible pressure of the hose, accelerates the ageing of seals and rules out some materials. Always check that the stated range covers the actual working temperature, not just ambient.

The hygiene of the installation itself

Stainless steel constructions with smooth surfaces, without recesses or exposed screws, can be rinsed and disinfected; a flaking painted-steel drum becomes a retention point. It is an audit criterion, in the same way as production equipment.

Not all stainless steel reels are equal on this point, and the steel grade says nothing about it. What counts is the absence of cavities and dead spaces, whether surfaces can be dismantled, and the design of the swivel joint. Limatec reels are built to the general food-hygiene principles of the CAC/RCP 1-1969 code with a swivel joint machined from solid, and their hoses are crimped in the factory — without a hose clamp, which is a classic retention point flagged at audit. A stainless steel reel fitted with a hose on a clamp remains a reel that is difficult to disinfect.

Dosing a detergent into the water line engages the protection of the network

Many washing stations do not just distribute water: they dose a detergent into the line, through a central unit or a kit built into the reel. From that moment, the unit is equipment connected to the internal network of water intended for human consumption, and the regulations require that network to be protected against backflow.

That is the purpose of the ACSE, the equipment sanitary conformity opinion issued by the CSTB in France. It indicates that the equipment meets the applicable requirements, after a risk analysis according to NF EN 1717 and verification of the protection device built into the unit.

The check to make is to ask for the sanitary opinion of the complete equipment, not that of the doser or the backflow preventer alone. Protection is assessed on the unit as connected, not on one of its components taken in isolation. At SEKO, certification can be read directly in the reference — a C in the middle of the code designates the certified unit — and two references may carry the same commercial designation and the same hose length without having the same regulatory status.

A second blind spot deserves attention with these fluids: the internal circuit and the swivel joint through which the product passes may be brass while the body is stainless steel. The point is developed on our food industry page.

Is an ACSE-certified reel needed to dose a detergent?

As soon as a product is injected into the water line, the unit becomes equipment connected to the internal network of water intended for human consumption and must protect that network against backflow. The ACSE, issued by the CSTB, certifies that the built-in protection device meets the applicable requirements, after a risk analysis according to NF EN 1717. Ask for the sanitary opinion of the complete equipment, not of the doser alone.

304 or 316 stainless steel for chlorinated disinfectant?

316. Chlorides cause pitting corrosion on 304, all the faster as the temperature is high.

Which swivel-joint seal to choose?

Viton or PTFE in the vast majority of cases. NBR, standard on water ranges, tolerates strong alkalis, acids and prolonged hot water poorly.

Can a high-pressure washing reel be used for detergent?

On a system with injection downstream of the pump, yes. If neat detergent passes through the reel, compatibility must be checked against the safety data sheet.
