Solvents, crop protection, welding

Few references, many constraints

These three families account for only a few models in the catalogue, but each imposes a rule that allows no exception. Grouping them here avoids diluting them and lets us say the essentials about each.

Solvents

Solvents attack elastomers more surely than any other common fluid. NBR is ruled out from the start; Viton covers a large share of cases, PTFE the rest. The absolute rule is to check compatibility against the solvent actually used, never against the family it belongs to: two closely related solvents can behave very differently towards the same seal.

Almost always added to this is the question of flammability, hence of electrical continuity and area classification. See our ATEX page.

Crop protection products

In agricultural spraying, the reel follows the boom or the gun from a tank, often over long distances. Chemical compatibility dominates, because formulations combine solvents, surfactants and aggressive active ingredients. Decontamination comes next: a reel that has carried a herbicide must not be used for a fungicide on a sensitive crop.

The practice is therefore to dedicate the reel to one family of products, and to favour strictly necessary lengths rather than comfortable ones.

Welding: oxygen and acetylene

The oxy-acetylene station imposes a safety rule without equivalent: no trace of oil or grease in contact with oxygen. Pressurised oxygen spontaneously ignites fatty substances. A reel that has been used to dispense oil must therefore never be converted to oxygen, and the dedicated couplings are not lubricated.

The two gases travel in separate hoses, in standardised colours, with reverse-threaded couplings on the fuel side to prevent any swapping. Flashback arrestors belong to the installation, but their presence conditions the safety of the whole.

With these fluids, the safety data sheet decides

Send us the SDS of the product in use rather than its trade name. For solvents and crop protection formulations, it is the only document that allows seal compatibility to be validated without error.

Frequently asked questions

How to check the compatibility of a solvent?

On the product’s safety data sheet and on the seal manufacturer’s compatibility table, for the exact solvent used. Chemical families are not enough.

Can an oil reel be reused for oxygen?

Never. Pressurised oxygen spontaneously ignites fatty substances, and a hose that has carried oil retains traces of it. An oxygen station requires new, degreased equipment.

Can one reel be used for several crop protection products?

Technically yes, in practice it is not advisable. Rinsing a long hose never removes residues completely, and a trace of herbicide on a sensitive crop is enough to cause damage.
